Kana learning tool

UPDATE   New version July 2007.
Now includes a "shuffled" option in Settings for Order of Display.
You can view the kana sequentially, in a random order (with random repetition), or shuffled, so that the order is random, but you'll go through all the kana before any are repeated.

Use the kana learning tool to practice writing or recognizing hiragana and katakana. If you want to see a demo of the tool, click the Show Demo button.

Being able to recognize kana doesn't mean that you can write it. You can use this tool as a set of flashcards for recognizing kana, but the tool helps you practice writing kana as well.

To practice writing kana:

  1. Click settings and choose hide Kana (this is the default). Also choose your kana type: katakana or hiragana.
  2. Click settings again to return to the main page.
  3. Click next to display a roman syllable.
  4. Try to write the kana character in the box below the roman text.
  5. Click the grey circle to display the character and check your work.

  6. Click erase to delete the character you have drawn.
  7. Click next to display the next roman syllable.

To display flashcards:

  1. Click settings and choose hide Roman. Also choose your kana type: katakana or hiragana.
  2. Click settings again to return to the main page.
  3. Click next to display a new kana character.
  4. After you have guessed what it is, click the black circle to display the roman text.

  5. Click next to display a new kana character.

If you have the flash player installed on your Pocket PC, you can download this .swf and run it on your Pocket PC.

Right-click on the link -- kana.zip -- and save the zip file to your hard drive. Extract kana.htm and kana.swf from the zip file and copy them to your Pocket PC device. Open the htm file in Pocket Internet Explorer.
